The primary practice for the middle phase of life, from 25-75 years old, is breathing. If you're not doing a designated breathing practice, somethings missing, and it will take time to cultivate, like your āsana practice. Here's your chance to begin. Whether you can come in person or not, you will receive the recording. Listen to it daily, follow along, and experience the effects of breath regulation on measurable health parameters such as pulse rate, respiration rate and heart rate variability. And other not-so-measurable ones you can feel, like increased stability and clarity as you move through your life circumstances.
When harnessing your subtle breath, it musn’t be forced, but ever-so-gradually tamed. If it becomes agitated, the prospect of a calmer system goes out the window. This is where vinyasa krama comes into play, and why breathing needs to be learned with a qualified Pranayama teacher, not from an app, not from a book. Through a series of well-designed steps, we start where we are and sattvic-ly employ breathing techniques and/or ratio-s that lead us to breathe smoothly, with a lengthened breath. This is not for the sake of having impressive breathing capacity, just as asana is never for the sake of impressive physical capacity.
A healthy relationship with your breath supports a healthier relationship with yourself and the world around you. As we change the pattern of breathing from agitated to smooth, we practice a deep form of self care. We deactivate stress. The impulses and perspectives we experience with agitated breathing patterns, such a being on guard, feeling stuck, anxious, pessimistic, avoidant, or feigning feeling ok when we are not, are subject to change. Positive change. Safety, connection and authenticity emerge as the backdrop of our interactions with the world we abide within, and the mind becomes fit for choosing healthier ways of living in our worlds.
